2008 Royal Ascot - Day 3 in review

History was made at the Royal Ascot meeting today as Yeats became the second horse in English flat racing to win the Ascot Gold Cup three times.

The day started with the Norfolk Stakes, where race favourite South Central ran a stunning race to finish 13 lengths clear of Spin Cycle. Prolific ran in third place.

John Gosden scored in the Ribblesdale Stakes, which his runner Michita won by three lengths. Second place went to Arthur’s Girl, with Hobby finishing third.

The day’s feature race saw Yeats triumph in Gold Cup, equaling Sagaro’s achievement in the 1970s. Geordieland finished second for the second year in a row, while Coastal Path finished third. Yeats’ win means Aidan O’Brien has captured every feature race in the Ascot meeting so far.

When the dust had settled on the Gold Cup it was time for a good, old-fashioned cavalry charge in the Britannia Stakes. The race produced a long odds winner as 28-1 Fifteen Love beat Yaasalek and Yaddree to the finishing post.

The Hampton Court Stakes saw Collection score a good win, beating Staying On in a late surge while King of Rome held on for third place.

The day concluded with the running of the King George V Stakes. Ryan Moore notched up his first win at the Ascot Meeting by piloting Colony to a win. Savarain finished second as Moonquake finished third.
