The Golden Jubilee Stakes is the headline event of the final day of the Royal Ascot meeting, and is also the final Group 1 race. The 2008 Golden Jubilee Stakes will be run at 3:45pm on Saturday the 24th of June on the Ascot flat racing course.

The Golden Jubilee Stakes was first run in 1868 as the Cork and Orrey Stakes, and was named after the 1866 Master of Buckhounds. The race attained Group 1 status in 2002 when it was renamed to commemorate the Golden Jubilee celebrations of that year.

The Golden Jubilee Stakes is a sprint run over a distance of six furlongs by three-year-old and above thoroughbreds. The race also offers the joint highest prize fund in the Royal Ascot meeting, matching the £375,000 on offer in the Prince of Wales Stakes.

Stiff competition and big fields make it difficult for racehorses to claim consecutive Golden Jubilee wins, with horses older than four years struggling to match the pace of the four-year-olds. The most recent Golden Jubilee Stakes winner was Soldier’s Son who won the race at 9/1 odds.

Three-time Epsom Derby winner Johnny Murtagh boasts the best win record for a jockey in the Golden Jubilee Stakes, having ridden three Holden Jubilee winners. His most recent victory came in the 2007 Golden Jubilee Stakes on Soldier’s Son. The race appears to be suited to experienced jockeys, as both Michael Kinane and Michael Hills have achieved two wins in the Golden Jubilee Stakes.

With the Golden Jubilee Stakes offering a massive prize fund, it is unsurprising to find that no trainer has managed to field more than one Jubilee Stakes winner in the last 20 years. However 1995 winner Saeed bin Suroor must be close to notching up his second Golden Jubilee Stakes win, having seen his horses showing in three of the races since the turn of the millennium.
