The Albany Stakes is a Group 3 race that opens the fourth day of racing at the Royal Ascot meeting. The 2008 Albany Stakes is scheduled to be run at 2:30pm on Friday the 23rd of June.

The Albany Stakes was added to the Royal Ascot meeting in 2002 as part of the expansion of the meeting into a five-day event. At the time the Albany Stakes was created it was registered as a listed race, but in 2005 was bumped up to Group 3 status. At present the Albany Stakes carries a £70,000 purse.

The Albany Stakes is open only to two-year-old thoroughbred fillies. The event is run over an intermediate distance of seven furlongs, which means jockey tactics often tend to play a role in deciding a race winner.

Albany Stakes Winners

Despite a relatively small prize fund, the Albany Stakes still puts some top international talent on display. In 2007 50-1 outsider Nijoom Dubai put on a superb performance in the race, powering past You'resothrilling, the 7/4 favourite, to claim an impressive Albany Stakes winners' title.

Irish jockey Jamie Spencer has used the Albany Stakes to notch up two race wins in the race's six-year history. His last winning run came on the aforementioned Nijoom Dubai, a victory for which the young jockey deserves considerable credit. Frankie Dettori also has a commendable race record of four placed finishes in the past six years, including one win in 2006.

The Albany Stakes has developed into something of a tussle between trainers Jeremy Noseda and Mick Channon. Both have trained two Albany Stakes winners, and both have seen their horses take both first and second place in the Albany Stakes in a single year.

Albany Stakes Betting

Race favourites have a decent history in the Albany Stakes, managing at least a placed finish over the last three years. However, performances like that put on by Nijoom Dubai indicate that it may be worthwhile putting some small bets on outsiders who you believe can get the job done.

A final consideration in Albany Stakes betting is the trainer involved, considering that Jeremy Noseda and Mick Channon together account for just over 65% of the race winners.
